Guinea Hen Calls in Our Yard

Every day, three times a day. The neighborhood guinea hens are cute, but loud. The flock just had a bunch of babies again. I counted 20 chicks the other day! Maybe I'll walk down to their house & see if I can get some video of them.

Amaretto Cranberry Kiss

The amaretto in this drink gives it a flavor similar to a mai tai. Jimi says it's unusual and interesting. I like it because it's not your usual cocktail, but all the ingredients are readily available. It would be a good drink to make for an evening summer party.

Winter Squash Soup

I've gotten a couple of (carnival?) winter squash from Johnson's Backyard recently. They're pretty big, so I decided to make a batch of soup out of them. Found this Winter Squash Soup recipe that's easy to make and freeze. It's a pretty standard cream of squash soup. Nothing amazing, but it makes for a good work lunch. If you have a bunch of squash that you need to use up, this is the perfect recipe. Used 1/2 cup of 2% milk instead of 1/4 cup heavy cream.

Houston's Crab Cakes

Houston's has the most awesome crab cakes I've ever had in my life. They're made out of fresh blue crab, and there's absolutely no bread filler. Just a little egg to bind the crab and a slight dusting of flour on the outside. And the coleslaw side is the bomb. The crab cakes aren't on the menu, so you just have to call at the beginning of the week to find out if they'll have them as a special. This visit Jimi and I ordered a glass of champagne, and the bartender brought us each a little bottle. Neat!
